What the game is about

Shape Sorter is the digital version of the classic wooden shape box. Along the top are slots with the outlines of different shapes, and at the bottom are colorful pieces. Your child drags each piece to its matching slot; when it fits, the piece stays in place and the slot lights up.

Dragging is a bit harder than tapping, so the game is also good fine motor practice. If a piece is dropped in the wrong place it simply slides back so your child can try again, with no penalty.

When every shape is placed, a congratulations message appears and you can start over.

How to play, step by step

  1. Look at the slots at the top and the colorful pieces at the bottom.
  2. Press on a piece and drag it without letting go.
  3. Drop it on the slot with the same shape.
  4. If it fits, it stays; if not, it goes back and you can try again.
  5. Place every shape to finish.

What your child learns

What to expect at each age

AgeWhat is typical
Age 3Spots the circle easily; with the other shapes, uses trial and error.
Age 4Tells squares and triangles apart and names them; dragging is smooth.
Age 5Solves the board quickly and can explain why each piece goes where it does.

How to play together

Before each move, ask what the shape is called and where your child thinks it goes. If they pick the wrong spot, let them try again before stepping in; discovering the mistake on their own is part of learning.

Add a language challenge: "How many sides does a triangle have?" "Does a circle have corners?" Simple questions like these prepare kids for geometry at school.

Frequently asked questions

My child finds dragging hard. What helps?

That's normal at first. A tablet works better than a phone because the pieces are bigger, and you can guide their hand the first few times.

Does it work with a mouse?

Yes. Hold down the mouse button to drag.

Which shapes are included?

Basic shapes that are easy to recognize and name at this age.

Parent tip

Go on a shape hunt around the house after playing. The game continues off the screen and your child discovers that shapes are everywhere.
